NMP undergoes MARINA accreditation

In order to expedite its offering of more training courses and expand its reach, the National Maritime Polytechnic, the state-run maritime training and research institute, recently underwent accreditation inspection by the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW).

The assessment is in line with the NMP’s intention of offering Updated Training for Officers In Charge of an Engineering Watch and Navigational Watch and application for recognition as an Assessment Center for Deck and Engine Ratings.

The assessors delved into Specific Key Areas (SKAs) which include the Training Designs of each of the courses, ranging from incorporation of knowledge, understanding, and proficiency in the STCW Code; Qualification of Instructors, Assessors and Supervisors; Facilities and Training Equipment; Textbooks and Videos; Other References; Videos and Other Teaching Aids; Assessment System; and Quality System documents.

Also part of the assessment was the inspection of the agency’s structural facilities and equipment, and the qualifications of assessors to gain recognition as an Assessment Center (AC) for deck and engine ratings.

The NMP, as the only maritime training and research agency in the country, continues to upgrade its facilities and provide maritime trainings required pursuant to the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) Convention as amended in 2010 and other value-adding courses required by employers.

The NMP encourages seafarers to avail of the NMP-OWWA (Overseas Workers Welfare Administration) Seafarers’ Upgrading Program (SUP), which entitles the beneficiary to receive financial assistance for training costs from the OWWA.

Moreover, the NMP also encourages those interested to avail of its maritime training programs to visit the NMP faceboook page (facebook.com\nmptrainingcenter) and website (www.nmp.gov.ph) for related information about NMP’s offered trainings.
