DOLE turns OSYs into entrepreneurs

Thirty-five members of a youth movement in La Union were able to improve their lives, from being an out-of-school youth (OSY) into entrepreneurs, with the help of Department of Labor and Employment’s livelihood assistance program.

The youth beneficiaries are members of Josiah Youth Movement, a workers group in the municipality of Rosario in La Union.

Since 2008, the Josiah, composed mainly of OSY, has been a beneficiary of the DOLE’s livelihood program. They used the DOLE’s P15,000.00 assistance for the establishment of their silkscreen printing business.

In 2009, they used the P20,000 cash prize they had won in the DOLE Kabuhayan Awards as additional capital in expanding their business.

In 2017, DOLE Regional Office No. 1 has again granted the youth group with another livelihood assistance amounting to P355,963.00 to further enhance their business.

The assistance was used for the purchase of six t-shirt production machines, one computer set, two cutting machines, tools, furniture and raw materials.

The LGU of Rosario, La Union, on the other hand, will shoulder the expenses for the conduct of trainings, particularly on business management, simplified bookkeeping and financial reports preparation.

To prepare for the new venture, 13 members of the youth group have undergone training on Dress Making, which helped them obtain their certificate for Dress Making, or Dress Making NC II, with two of its members will be involved in printing.

Ervi Petero, youth group President, expressed her deep gratitude to the DOLE and the local government unit (LGU) of Rosario for the latest assistance provided to them which will help their members derive income and enhance their skills while searching for jobs.

Alam po namin na kailangang maipakita naming karapat-dapat kami sa ipinagkaloob na ayuda sa amin. Dahil dito, mas pag-iigihan pa po namin ang pangangalaga sa aming proyekto,” said Petero.
